Your Guide to a Successful Start at UM! 

Congratulations on becoming a 'Cane! We're thrilled to welcome you to the University of Miami. This guide will help you navigate First-Year Advising and Course Registration, ensuring a smooth transition into your academic journey.

  • 1. Check your UM email for instructions from your Transitional Advisor:

    Complete UMX Modules 1 - 4 in your "UMX-100" course in Blackboard.

    • Don’t know what UMX Modules are yet? Click here.

     Your advisor will answer questions about:

    • The "Road to UM" checklist (found in your Applicant Portal)
    • Your upcoming course enrollment (including potential transfer credits, and registration process by school/college)
    • General academic concerns

  • 2. Prepare for a productive session by:

    Complete the Pre-Registration form carefully! It helps us ensure you're enrolling in the right courses. We'll check to avoid placing you in classes you've already taken.
    • Reviewing your major's Academic Bulletin. This outlines your program's specific course requirements. 
    • Once you find your major in the bulletin, review the Plan of Study tab to see what your courseload could look like. 
    • Gathering any transfer credit information you wish to discuss. (AP/IB/AICE, etc.)

  • 3. Get ready for your session:

    • Use a laptop or PC: Your advisor will share important information on the screen and your phone’s screen is too small for this session. 

    • Test your microphone and camera: Ensure clear communication with your advisor. 

    • Find a quiet space: Focus on the conversation and avoid distractions. 

  • 4. Make the most of your pre-meeting time:

    • Review your completed UMX Modules in Blackboard and the Academic Bulletin
       
    • Explore the Areas of Knowledge requirements. These are general education courses you can fulfill through various options (major, minor, or cognate). 

    • Gather information about any transfer credits you might have. 

      • Transferring credits? Click here to find the AP/IB/AICE and other accelerated credits that may be accepted by the University of Miami.
      • You might have to get your transfer credits evaluated if you took college-level courses outside of UM. To submit a course for evaluation click here.

    • Familiarize yourself with  CaneLink (our Student Information System) and the Schedule Builder tool.

  • 6. Once you arrive on Campus:

    • During ’Cane kick-off, you'll meet your Primary Academic Advisor during Cane Kick-off.
    • They'll assist you with any last-minute adjustments during the "Add/Drop" period.
